Crop disease and pests are among the most significant threats to our food supply, accounting for an estimated 40% of all global yield loss among major crops. This has existential consequences, ranging from severe undernourishment, political instability, and economic losses approaching $300 billion every year. The situation is compounded by the escalating climate crisis that enables more pathogens in new places.
Safeguarding the world’s food supply is the challenge of our lifetime. By 2050, we must feed an additional 2 billion people AND reduce our use of land, water, and chemicals. Solutions must address commercial agriculture, which produces at large scale, and smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries, who contribute significantly to crop production and feed large populations yet lack access to the latest innovations.
The most durable, effective, and equitable way to protect our crops is through building an efficient pipeline to produce more resilient crops.
